With the 2009 season drawing towards a close, it's time to reflect on the seasons ups and downs. After so much success last season, things were a little more quiet for the Lodge this year in comparison. That's not to say there were some notable successes in 2009.

Once again the A Team took the Mid Week Division 1 Title going through the whole season with an incredible unbeaten record of played 18, won 18 and a record 24 plus points win margin over the Guild and JWP who were fighting out for second spot. The A team just missed out on their 3rd league & cup double in a row following a 5 shot defeat by Park in the Ces Foster Final. This together with reaching the Regional final of the National Top Club competition before going out in the countries final 16 stage , represents a great season for the Club.

The B Team after a good start, have only recorded a single win in the second half of their first season in Division 2 for over 5 years. There still remains one game outstanding (v. Seaton away on 1st Sept)  however they live to fight on again after avoiding relegation and climbing a few places due to points picked up in re-arranged games.

The C Team once again struggled this year picking up only 11.5 points from their 13 games to date. Their remaining game against Eldon Grove D has yet to be re-arranged and looks likely to fall foul of any attempt to arrange. With a number of C Team regulars disappointed with the  regular poor turn outs every week, things are looking ominous for the teams future.

The Saturday team after a bad start, gained ground and consolidated their league status and look to finish 4th with just one game to be played on Saturday 5th Sept. Due to other teams struggling to get 16 players out on a regular basis, the Leagues format looks likely to change for next season.

Individually, it was Bob George  holding the club banner, just missing out in the Hartlepool singles final to Gary Doherty of the Park by a score of 21-20.  Reaching the final however is a great achievement in itself.
Congratulations to the Lodge's National 'Top Club' competition players who not only overcame the Yorkshire side Dunnington, but six days later passed the challenge of Cumbria's Whitehaven to reach the last 16 in England. They now  progress to the Regional Semi Finals / Final to be held at Manchester on the 26th July.  Good luck to all involved.

The first Merit table standings are now in the club competitions link and it's club Hon. Sec. Bill Nicholson who's running away with it.  Bill has an unprecedented  11 wins out of 11 in all club league and Ces Foster cup games this season and is about 1.5 average points ahead of nearest rival Dave Fenwick.

Club News
The Club are happy to announce that the club received a generous award of £3,000 from the Tees Valley Community Foundation Grassroots Grant this week (29-1-09). The award will be given in two parts, £2357 To be paid to the club at the end of February, with the remainder in April this year.
The award will enable the club to extend the existing groundsman's store near the green to provide a much needed secure store for the green maintenance equipment.
Anyone who has seen inside the current 'shed', will realise that the expansion of the storage space is needed desperately. Currently things are so cramped that in order to get at most equipment, the store has to be fully  emptied and then all put back in again when finished. It is also hoped to include a separate secure store for the 'trolley' with mats, jacks and score boards etc., saving the task of pushing it to and from the clubhouse every game. The award will also help us purchase a  cassette for the new cutting machine.
We are obviously delighted with the award of the grant and would like to thank the Tees Valley Community Foundation for it's very generous award which will make a big difference to our abilities to maintain the green and progress our goal started last year to provide the best playing surface possible.

Provisional WBT World Rankings
The provisional World Bowls Tour rankings were produced this week with just the Welsh Open left to be played this  season.  Glenn Skipp is predicted to drop 5 places from 28th to 33rd after only entering the Scottish Open this year. Glenn lost his Opening game there, but still picked up 1 point for qualifying, which in the first year after qualifying is multiplied by 5. This added to points gained over the last three years gives him 15 ranking points and a provisional tied 32nd with 3 others.
No doubt Glenn will be looking to qualify for more WBT competitions again in the next Indoor season and boost himself back up the ratings.
International Series
Following the recent Trial the England team has been announced and four bowlers from the Durham County IBA Liberty Trophy team have been selected,  including from the Owton Lodge: Glenn Skipp and Mark O'Riordan. The pair have been England regulars in recent years and together with Stanley’s  Brett Arkley and Gary R Smith are again selected for the International Series to be held at Belfast Indoor Bowling Club on Friday 20th - Sunday 22nd March 2009.  Durham's Robert Chisholm, the 23 year old recent winner of the Welsh Open is also included as reserve.
As expected, following a quiet season, the Lodge's Glenn Skipp moved down the World Bowls Tour rankings announced following the Welsh Open (the final tournament of the season). Glenn slipped down to joint 33rd place with four others on 15 ranking points. The highest mover was Stanley's Robert Chisholm moves from 118th to 19th following his win in the Welsh Open and as a result of his top 20 place, automatically qualifies for next years World Indoor Championship.
2009/2010  WBT World Rankings
With the new 2009 season almost upon us, there has been a hive of activity on and around the bowling green clubhouse over the past few weeks. The new water system was finally commissioned on Sunday 5h April following a few teething problems and was put straight into use by Brian Price to water in the 'Genesis' grass root growth fertilizer which was applied to the green that afternoon.

The first 'display' of the system was viewed by quite a number of the members who turned up to carry out tidy up work to the rear of the pub following installation of the new water pipe last year.

Thanks must go to those members who turned up on the Sunday
for a great job in clearing the rear area and filling in the trench. The work was a follow on from the previous day's filling in of the concrete area cut up for the new pipe, and laying of the new entrance path to the green.

The bulk of the work is now done however we still need help in finishing off the paving slabs.  Number will require lifting and a sand / cement mix brushing into the cracks to the two remaining sides. (thanks to Richard Ayre, John Delafield & Brian Watson for the work to completing two sides so far).
2009 Season Preparation Work
Thanks to all who helped out :
Maurice Anderson, Dave Kilner, Brian Price, Richard Ayre, John Delafield,  John McKay &  Michael Simpson.

A special mention should be made for the work contribution made by Brian Watson. Wato's help over the past few weeks has included brushing in a sand /cement mix to the cracks to the paving slabs around the green for 4 hours on the Monday (which is quite hard work believe me), help in mixing pouring and leveling of concrete all day Saturday and help in the clearing up on the Sunday. Not bad for a guy who was celebrating his 70th Birthday during the week.

Works to provide a new shed are in hand and is hoped to start soon. In the meantime, we have no option but to use the Clubhouse for the storage of tools and materials whilst the shed is sorted out. Apologies to those that this will effect, but hopefully it will only be for a short time, and we will all benefit from the new shed when built.
2009 Season Start
2009 is well under way and the Lodge teams have gotten off to a great start. The A team sits atop of Division 1 with 3 wins out of 3. The B team too have started well in Division 2 and lay second 1.5 points behind Blackhall with 3 wins from 3 games. The C Team too lead their division after the only game played in 2 weeks in Division 5 resulted in a 3-3 draw with Grays, the Lodge team winning the long game by 1/3 of a shot. The Sat team after a poor start at Old Boys (6-0) can back with a 4-2 win over Seaton in their second game.

The Lodge progressed through the first rounds of the National Competitions  (Top Club  & Double Fours). A 4-1 win against Mainforth earns a tie against the Hartlepool's  Park in the next round of the Top Club and a  40-28 win over Stockton puts the Lodge through to a match with Mainsforth in the Double Fours.
2009 - Half Way Point
At the half way point of the season and it's been a mixed bag for the Lodge. The A team lead the Mid week Division 1 with 9 wins out of 9 and a 10 point lead over second place JWP. The latest win being a 5-1 defeat of the Park's A team  last week. To this the club added a win in the Ces Foster first round over Town with all Lodge rinks both home and away recording good wins.
The B team after a fine start to life in Division 2 found things more hard going with a run of 4 defeats picking up just 2 points in the process. A win last week (4-2) away to Rovers has hopefully stopped the rot and look forward to a game at home against struggling Norton in the first game of the season second half.
The C team are once again struggling to get teams out and are regularly 2, 3 and 4 players short when they do play. Well done to the C team  regular main stays Matt Daley, Arthur Frankland, Bill Hatch, Jim Doherty, Brian White and Captain Brian Hoey for regularly turning out in games there is little chance of winning once they loose 1/3rd points.
The Saturday team after a little bit of a struggle to start with have steadily on the been improving to a mid table position, however care and better bowling is a 'must' in the second half of the season and improvement maintained to ensure Division A status for next season.
In the National competitions, the double fours squad went out in the 3rd round to the Leeholme Club (Durham)  but remain in the Top Club event. An away tie at Dunnington near York on June 30th awaits them in the 4th round with the winners to contest for a place in the regional finals against either Whitehaven (Cumbria)  or Backworth (Northumberland) at home.
Top Club progress
After at least 3 cancellations, the club's outstanding Saturday fixture against Horden (originally due to be played on the second Saturday of the season) has finally now been played. The Lodge were finally able to put a team out (2 players short)  to play the game. Thanks and well done to all who turned up, especially those who were playing for the Vets team in the afternoon. The game was very closely contested and thoroughly enjoyed by both teams on a warm sunny evening.

Our thanks to Horden for their great company, hospitality and their patience following all the cancellations.

Re-re-re-re-arranged Sat game v Horden
The Lodge finally bowed out of the National 'Top Club' competition at the last 16 stage at Manchester on Sunday (26-7-09) in a dramatic & devastating fashion to Worcester.  Travelling to  the Heaton Park greens in Manchester early on Sunday morning, there was no indication of the heavy rains which were to greet the team until just 7 miles from the venue. The game started on a very wet green at 9:30am  with all players struggling to find a length in the conditions, that just got worse. The standing water on the green was rising at such a rate that we thought Glenn Skipp & Tom Grainger may need inflatable water wings to keep their heads above the high tide line.

The Lodge got off to a great start with Dave Fenwick coming from behind to post the first point of the afternoon, finishing 5 up with two ends to play in the 2-wood singles despite some confusion of the score. Then Glenn Skipp, again coming from behind, posted the Lodge's second point by the score 21-16 with some skillful 'hoying' in the 4-wood singles. - Both players probably needed deep heat applying to their shoulders following this one.

At this point you could see the spray and  bow waves of the woods as they passed through the water in what was becoming a dangerous farce, with a number of bowlers on both sides (and officials) slipping and falling.

Both the Lodge's pairs and rinks squads recovered from poor starts with some spirited bowling to peg back level with their opponents, only to see them fall behind again with some great bowling from the Worcester lads, and both go onto loose.

With the match score at 2-2 it was all down to the triples. On the penultimate scheduled end the Lodge already three up, picked up a further two to lead by five going into the last. The Worcester front pair with nothing to loose played some great bowls to lay 4 or 5 by the time Cliff Simpson went to bowl. Cliff drew a great shot under tremendous pressure with his second wood to the relief of all the Lodge players & supporters. Unfortunately it was just past the jack, with a Worcester bowl jack high and 10 inches wide, the target for the Worcester skip was much bigger than it would have been otherwise, allowing him to use his own wood to remove the Lodge bowl with his last.  Four bowls were removed and a measure for the 5th (and 6th) eventually scored five shots to Worcester and an 18-18 tie. The extra end built up in Worcesters favour until a firing shot by Paul Stephenson moved the jack into the open. The opposition skip went through with his first two whilst Cliff drew two shots in. The Worcester skip then found a cracker to draw shot with his last wood which, from the far end, looked to have run through. Cliff managed to disturb the Worcester wood with the final bowl, but not by enough and the game was over.

Congratulations to Worcester and commiserations to the Lodge players.

Congratulations to the Lodge on reaching the last 16 and their fine display in conditions that throughout the match resembled dancing on 'thin' ice.
Top Club Regional Finals
Just a quick note for all those who don't know that I have taken up the position of Hartlepool & District Bowling Association Senior Vice President as from the last league secretaries meeting in July with a view (subject to AGM vote approval) of becoming the Hartlepool & District President for 2010. Obviously it will be a great honour for both the club and myself and I look forward to a very memorable year.
If elected, I will be following in the footsteps of George Newton, the only other H & DBC president from the O.Lodge.    -  Clive Hutchinson

New Shed - Progress at last
Work on the new shed finally gets under way this week after many weeks delays due to builder problems and a few injuries prevented the work from starting. It's hoped that the excavation for the floor to the new shed will be completed by this weekend  (1st & 2nd August) with the concrete floor and walls following soon after.

I can only apologise for the delay which means many building materials and equipment from the old shed  has laid in the clubhouse for most of the season.
As the season enters it's last full month, the A team already appear to have wrapped up the mid week Division 1 title with a 5-1 win over nearest rivals JWP followed by another 5-1 win away to Park B which leaves them over 20 points clear and a 14 wins out of 14 record.  This added to a 75 shot quarter final win in the Ces Foster cup over fellow Div 1 team Eldon Grove shows what a great year they've had thus far.

The B team has a mixed bag from the last few weeks falling just 5 points away from the relegation zone due mainly to cancelled games. They have 2-3 games in hand, but must turn those games into points to avoid a nervous end to the season.

The C Team have not played a game for over 4 weeks due to cancellations / byes and currently lay at the bottom of Division 5 with games in hand. Time however is running out to get those games played if they wish to avoid last years fiasco with 2 games not played and 12 points deducted.

The Sat Team look comfortable in the middle of the Saturday Division A league but they too have started to build up a back log of games following recent cancellations.

Things are going to get rather hectic in the last few weeks in an attempt to get games played, so please keep an eye on the notice boards for up to date information
August 2009
Hartlepool & District Finals
The Lodge sadly missed out in the town finals held this weekend (22-23 Aug.) loosing out to the Park in the two finals the Lodge reached. On Saturday morning Bob George lost to Gary Dougherty 21-20 in a tight match. In a game that swung one way and then the other, Bob looked to have won the game but finally loose out in to some good bowling by Gary. Well done to Gary and  also to Bob on the great achievement of reaching the final and coming so close.

The Ces. Foster held on the Sunday matched up the Lodge with the Park in what turned out to be a disappointing  game for the Lodge. Falling back over 20 shots after just 5 ends across the board, the Lodge were up against it from the start. As the game progressed the lead gradually came downand for one brief moment the Lodge got back to within 6 shots following a five count by Cliff Simpson's rink, however counts almost immediately for the Park on the other 3 rinks restored their lead to 14. Although the Lodge slowly reduced the gap again to single figures, they soon ran out of ends and the Park ran out comfortable winners.
Congratulations to the Lodge A Team who once again secured the Mid Week Division 1 title with about 4 games to spare following their 6-0 win against Eldon Grove and the defeat of closest rivals JWP. The Lodge to date have the unprecedented record of winning all their league games so far and currently hold a played 17 & won 17 record. He last remaining game in the league is an away game against Park A on Monday 24th August.
A Team secure Mid Week Division 1 Title Again

2009 Presentation Evening
The Owton Lodge Bowling Club Presentation Evening 2009 is to be held on Saturday 21st November 2009 at the Owton Lodge at 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start. Tickets will be £1 per person. The evening as usual will include stand-up bingo and a raffle - prizes are most welcome.
After over 12 years of looking after the bowling green, Brian Price is to retire from being our greenkeeper. Thanks to Brian's efforts, the club has probably the best and most enjoyable green in the area to play on. Not many realise the numerous hours hard work Brian has spent week in, week out in achieving the high standard playing surface that we now all enjoy.  His departure will leave a large void of knowledge and effort which must be filled if we are to continue to enjoy the great playing surface that he has left us.

Our thanks go to Brian for the tremendous work he has put into the green over these past twelve years and with it our hopes he continues to enjoy his bowls.

2009 Final League Tables
The 2009 Final League tables have now been published and they confirm the A team have won the Mid week Div.1 title by a record tally of 92 points and a record margin of 29 points over second place Park. The Lodge B team survive in Div. 2 (just) in spite of points reductions. The C team finish last in Div. 5 with 11.5 pointsand playing short on 31 rinks. The Sat. Team finished 4th in Div.A behind Park, Old Boys and Horden.
For those who have not been to the Owton Lodge since the end of the season, you may not know that Jack & June Hollifield are no longer the tenants of the pub as from the last week in October. Talking previously with Jack, I understand that they both now plan to retire. Although no longer in charge of the pub, Jack & June have both indicated that they intend to remain playing bowls at the Owton Lodge.      Best Wishes to you both on your retirement
Jack & June move on from the Lodge pub
2009 Presentation Evening
The 2009 Presentation Evening was held at the Owton Lodge on Saturday 21st November and were once again a great success. The Ladies Presentations were performed by Irene Goldsbrough with the help of ladies Secretary Janet Ridpath. This was followed with a very sucessful speech (because he didn't make any jokes..!) by Dave Kilner on behalf of absent President Norman Taylor. Dave then asked Jack and June Hollifield if they would present the prizes on the Club's behalf following their recent retirement.

The Presentation was followed by a superb buffet (I think Jack must have left the recipe to his curry..!!) the stand up bingo and raffle. This year we had perhaps more prizes donated than any other. Thanks to all involved with the organisation on the night  especially Dave Kilner who put so much into making the whole night such an enjoyable one
