Owton Lodge Bowling Club
2007 Archive
It was very a successful weekend for the Lodge during the Hartlepool & District BA Finals weekend held at Eldon Grove. On the Friday evening Albert Ward once again claimed the singles title beating Steve Hutchinson 21 - 17 in the final.
Following on from a great season last year when he took the Durhm County singles title and was runner up in the town singles to now team mate Jim Ainger, he went one better this year in a very closely contested game.
Finals weekend continued to be good for the club on the Sunday with the Lodge taking the honours against the Park in the Cec Foster Final.
The Park started the game the better and went well ahead in the early stages with some excellant bowling on all rinks, however by the half way stage the Lodge had found their form and pulled level then ahead. Steady play on the rinks skipped by Cliff Simpson, Paul Stephenson and Albert Ward were helped by a come back by Dave Fenwick's rink who in the early stages fell well behind. Congratulations to both the Park and Lodge teams on a well played final enjoyed in particular by this supporter from his position near the bar.
Honours were even in the league game again against the Park on the Tuesday following the Finals Bank Holiday. The game ended in a 3 - 3 (68 - 68) draw. This left the Lodge two and a half points ahead of the Park with both teams with one game to play.
The Lodge made sure of the League title with a resounding 6 - 0 win against defending champions JWP on home soil. Knowing 4 points would be enough for this years title, it somehow seemed even more fitting that the team regained the title by beating last years league winners.
The rinks skipped by Dave Fenwick and Cliff Simpson took good early leads, and were soon joined by Albert Ward's rink. The last game was tight until the 17th end when Colin Box's rink pulled ahead.
In the end the Lodge enjoyed an emphatic win, and the satisfaction of regaining the Mid Week Division One Crown.
Following a maximum 6-0 win at home over Boilermakers on the last Tuesday of the season with a 60 shot advantage, the B team finally played the league leaders Rich West at Grayfields on the following Saturday afternoon.
The match started evenly with 2 rinks well ahead and the other two falling well behind.
It was at this point that the Rich West rink against Maurice Anderson's reduced a 15 shot lead and then passed the Lodge trio to lead 20 - 18 with 2 ends remaining. The Lodge rink turned it on and scored a 3 and 4 on the last two ends to secure their point. Richard Ayre and Brian Watson's rinks were both well down. Brian's Rink hadn't scored for 14 ends and were over 20 shots behind when they produced a comeback to reduce the final score to less than 10. Richard Ayre's rink were always behind however reduced the arrears from 15 down to single figures. In the meantime Clive Hutchinson's rink with Jack Hollifield & Steve Williamson had steadily pulled away from the start and just kept going to finally win 25 - 7.
The dramatic last end of the match was on Richard Ayre's rink. With a 4 shot lead in the long game, yet laying 3 down on the end, no Lodge bowl within 4ft and the opposition skip drawing well, Richard drew his last wood 3 inches behind the jack for shot to secure the 4 points and the Division 4 title by 1 point.

Congratulations to Dave Fenwick for his success in regaining the Durham County Two Wood Singles title and as a member of the winning Durham County team in the English National Two Fours at Worthing.
Presentation night was once again a great success in the newly refurbished Owton Lodge lounge. The President delivered a short(ish) speech in which he congratulated all the club bowlers on a very successful season for the club. He went on to thank all the members for their support during his two years as President and presented Alec Robbie, Maurice Anderson, Bill Nicholson, Dave Kilner and Brian Price with a token gift of appreciation for their invaluable help and support, especially during his term as President.
The presentations were made to the winners and finalists by Jackie Hutchinson.
The superb buffet was followed by the usual fun and games of the 'Stand - Up' bingo and a raffle with over 30 kindly donated prizes. (See Presentation Photos on the Presentation Night link on the left).

Four new members are to join the Lodge for the 2008 season to add strength to all the club's teams.
We welcome back Glenn Skipp to the club after a two year absence in which he not only become an England International Indoor player but moved up the World Bowls Tour rankings to 30th. Glenn also recently qualified for the Potters World Championships in the new year. We also welcome his Thornaby team mate Mark O'Riordan a very talented player and himself an England Indoor International player. The Club also welcome two new bowlers in Colin Box's step son Nino and his friend Craig both of who looked promising when having a roll up on the Lodge green during last season under Colin's supervision.
New Members to Add Strength the Lodge in 2008
It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of our longest serving member and former President Frank Ward on October 13th 2007 following illness.
Frank became a member of the Lodge in the early 1960's and was a very talented club member for over 40 years including being our President in 1984 - 86.
Bowls and the Owton Lodge Bowling Club in particular was a large part of his life and only illness prevented him from continuing to play the game he loved so much.
Frank will always be remembered by all those who knew him as a true Gentleman in both sport and in life.
Our thoughts go to his wife Joan and family at this sad time.
